Sony has developed a new wireless technology

February 9, 2010 – 2:36 am

Sony announced the development of new technology for wireless transmission of data, which is expected to replace part of the wired connections in consumer electronics devices.

The proposed system is based on the use of millimeter waves – electromagnetic waves with a frequency of 30 to 300 GHz and a length of 1 to 10 mm. Range selection is nonrandom: millimeter waves allow to achieve high-speed data transmission at relatively short distances in the application of compact antennas.

Sony managed to combine the transmitter and receiver in millimeter microchip with an area of active area of 0,13 mm ² . The system can transmit data at speeds up to 11 Gbit / s over distances up to 14 mm in the application download size of about 1 mm. This delivers high energy efficiency.

Application of the new system instead of the traditional compounds are said Sony, will reduce the size and reduce the cost of integrated circuits and other components of electronic devices while improving reliability by reducing the number of physical contacts.

It is assumed that new technology will find use in televisions, household appliances, etc.
