NATO to quarrel with Russia because of Georgia

May 25, 2009 – 9:00 pm

Less than 2-3 months from the date of exchange of statements encouraging the leaders of the United States and Russia to “reboot” problem of how tense the situation again.

At this time, because that began on May 6, NATO exercises in Georgia, which President Medvedev has called an “open provocation”.

Unfortunately, these exercises are able to disrupt the long-awaited consolidation of the common strategic interests of Russia and the United States, particularly in the area fight against the Taliban and al-Qaeda “.

While NATO believes that the May exercises are routine and relatively minor in scale, Russia has rightly objected that they were conducted in an area where, more recently, fighting, and because, of course, are confrontational. There is no doubt that one of the objectives of the current exercise is the moral support of the Georgian president, whose credibility as the international arena, and in Georgia itself is in very poor condition.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov spoke clearly, saying that “dangerous to maintain the current Georgian regime, which has not been waived by solving their problems through the further militarization and

the use of military force.”

Many countries such as Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova,
Serbia, and Estonia, at the last moment refused to take part in the NATO exercises.

The growth of Islamic fundamentalism is a common threat to America, Europe, Russia, China and many other countries. To combat this dangerous phenomenon requires the combined efforts of the kind, perhaps even more ambitious than that of the Allies during the Second World War. At this time the task is much more complicated, because we are faced with a virtually unlimited masses of religious fanatics, consisting of non-state actors that use unconventional methods of war and with the support, albeit in some cases only a moral, in many countries around the world. Moreover, in Pakistan, which is still considered a U.S. ally, the Taliban, Al Qaeda and other jihadi terrorist groups feel volgotno so that they can plan and execute major terrorist attacks, and disrupt the supply of U.S. forces and NATO sometimes with the direct support of the security of Pakistan.

Recently, at a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said openly that, today Al-Qaeda “is based not Afghanistan and Pakistan and that the past few years, the full integration of the Al-Qaeda and the Taliban is accelerated.

For the West, the destruction and the destruction of this terrorist network is an important task, and in the interests of Russia to join the fight against this most dangerous enemy. It is in this case, “reboot” can yield quick results in improving US-Russian relations.

Russia allowed the passage of humanitarian goods through its territory to supply U.S. troops and NATO, but this is not enough. Moscow can and should do much more, such as to allow the transportation of military goods to persuade former Soviet Central Asian republics and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to contribute, as well as to allow America to use the Russian military base in Kant (Kyrgyzstan) to replace the lost American base in Manas.

In addition, the Afghan Government would like to get them familiar Russian weapons and the use of Russian military instructors to train its soldiers and officers, just as happened during the first successful war against the Taliban in 2001 -2002 years.

Of course, this time Russia did not wish to be humiliated, as happened in the past 17 years. After the September 11 attack Bush, Putin expressed his sympathy and solidarity, not only in words but in deeds. Russia has made in the victory over the Taliban’s contribution is much larger than all the American allies, including NATO members, and how George Bush thank the Russians for assistance?

way out of the ABM treaty without consulting with Russia; decision to deploy missile defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic, Kosovo’s independence, NATO expansion, despite the promise of his father not to do so, the support of the “color revolutions” and, last but not least, politics, oil and gas pipes to transport energy from the Caspian region and Central Asia, bypassing Russia.

All the above practices should seemingly forever discourage help America, but the Kremlin should look at it from the other side. Suppose that America recognizes its defeat in Afghanistan and Yankee go home, as has already been in Vietnam. This would mean that Russia will remain the only real deterrent force the Taliban and al-Qaeda “on the southern edge of its territory, which is equivalent to twenty-Chechen conflict. Will Russia cope alone? Will it help to China?

On the other hand, if Russia were to truly help America and NATO in Afghanistan, one can confidently predict that the position of anti-lobby will be completely undermined, and all those who Washington continues to call for tough policy towards Russia will be rejected by the American public.

So, in the interests of Russia and the United States as soon as possible to establish a strategic partnership to address common security problems. Unfortunately, NATO, through exercises in Georgia, violated the Obama Administration declared the “reboot” in relations between two countries, which is only at the hands of our common enemies and undermines the interests of our friends and partners.

Most reasonable that NATO can do now – is to complete their exercises as soon as possible and to show thereby, that the West is ready to accept the existing legitimate interests of Russia.
